“This summer, I represented two detained asylum applicants in their bond hearings. The first asylum applicant was granted a bond of $7,000 and has since been released and is now settled with his family. The second bond hearing is tomorrow. These asylum applicants were especially vulnerable to deportation as they had an extremely difficult time finding interpretation in their native language to help them fill out their asylum applications. Multiple asylum applicants with the same issue were eventually ordered removed because they were unable to fill out and submit their asylum applications in court. NWIRP has since signed up to represent them before the BIA in appealing their removal orders. I supported the attorney on this case in legal research and obtaining documents in one client's preparation for appeal.

In addition, I represented another detained asylum applicant in their credible fear interview and parole request. This client passed their CFI and was granted release on parole. He will continue his asylum and likely SIJS case at home with his family. I also represented another client in their prosecutorial discretion request for termination of their removal proceedings. Although this client had extensive criminal history, we hoped that his other mitigating circumstances would outweigh his past mistakes. Unfortunately, the request was denied. Finally, I worked with a family that was part of the family separation litigation in their application for humanitarian parole and a request for ICE to lift a detainer on a U.S. citizen currently in DOC custody.”
